At Home Care for Seniors Advice: Sun Safety Tips

Oct 11, 2018 by Gregg Gammello

Sunshine can instantly boost a senior’s mood. However, when older adults fail to take certain safety precautions in the sun, they may end up with sunburns, dehydration, heat stroke, eye issues, and other serious conditions. Providers who specialize in at home care for seniors in Lansdale, PA, recommend the following sun safety tips for older adults:

Drink Plenty of Water

Senior citizens should drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water each day. Professionals who offer at home care suggest that seniors keep a water bottle by their side at all times, so they are constantly reminded to drink. If possible, older adults should stick to water as pop, alcohol, and other beverages may make them more dehydrated.

Dress Appropriately

When older adults are getting ready to go out into the sun, they should put on loose, light-colored clothing. This will protect their skin from harmful UV rays while still allowing it to breathe. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses is also wise.

Crank Up the Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is essential on hot, sunny days. If seniors do not have an air conditioning system, they should visit a community center, movie theater, or loved one’s home. Fans can also be used to keep their home cool.

Be Mindful of Heat Stroke

Professionals who provide at home care for seniors should be mindful of the signs of heat stroke. If they are disoriented, have dry skin, feel nauseous, or a rapid pulse, they should seek medical attention right away.

Wear Sunscreen

Seniors should never go outside on sunny days without sunscreen. If possible, they should purchase a sunscreen that is designed to block UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen should also be reapplied on days that older adults are spending a lot of time in the sun.

Drinking plenty of water, dressing appropriately, being mindful of heat stroke, and wearing sunscreen are all important for seniors who would like to prevent sun damage.
